I'm updating this journal because of this:  A More Global NavigationFor many deviants, the Notifications page (formerly known as the Message Center) acts as their main-hub on DeviantArt.  Deviants spend a lot of time there -- checking newly submitted deviations, responding to comments, voting in polls, etc. -- all while switching back and forth to other core areas of the site, like Browse and Watch.
UPDATE: In order to create a more cohesive navigation that incorporates core site components and makes the site experience clearer, we’re adding Notifications and Notes into the global subnavigation bar that includes Browse, Today, and Watch.  Ultimately, helping deviants easily navigate between these frequently-visited areas.  Based on community feedback, the order of the subnavigation is now Browse, Today, Watch, Notifications

Deviantart is turning sh*t and I'm sick of big button websites. It's one of the reasons I virtually abandoned Wordpress, and never set foot on Tumblr. :(

This journal entry was made in response to these changes: Beginnings of Site Simplification

I have only been on Deviantart for a short time compared to others, but when I first started in December last year, I found it very easy to navigate and explore.

The changes (which seem like they'll go ahead whether they listen to this or not) threaten the way we interact with and use Deviantart. By replacing the menus for messages and notes with numbers, I believe it will put new users off and make things more complicated and irritating than simple. Not all changes are good, and the 'Simplifications' are a great example of this.

By 'simplifying' the site, you will take away its uniqueness and character. This site is good because it is fairly complex (but easy enough to use) and unique. The layout as it is at the moment is unlike anything found on other websites. If Deviantart starts 'simplifying' its layout, it will be following the trend that so many other websites (that we've left) have done so before. With 'Site Simplification' you will be taking the very 'deviant' out of Deviantart.

I do not think it is a good idea for a site with this big a community to make sudden changes without at least listening to the ideas and input of the community itself.

If you do not agree with the "Site Simplification" changes, please +fav favourite this journal and leave a comment and help spread this petition to others who also oppose these changes. This journal will need serious signal boosting if our voices are to be heard! SPREAD THE WORD AND GET OUR FELLOW DEVIANTS INVOLVED!

I don't expect this journal entry to get the attention of the admins, but if they are reading this I would like to kindly ask you if you would put your changes on hold and host an opinion poll for each big change you make that every deviant can see (maybe under the notices section) so that we may at the very least vote democratically on changes made to a site that we love and are a part of, and help make it better for all.

"Simplification" to many designers often translates to obscuring functionality for the sake of aesthetic. The only thing deviantArt has going for it is a good user interface, not a clean one, but a good one. I'm strongly opposed of "cleaning up" potentially important functionality for the sake of some design ethos." - AtomicTiki
