Lives Are Far More Important Than Your Religion! by TheArtFrog Lives Are Far More Important Than Your Religion! by TheArtFrog
www.independent.ie/world-news/…

This may be a response to this news story (and various others), but really this stamp applies to ALL religions.

Many people seem to be under the delusion that morality comes from God. But morality is not theonomous; it doesn't and cannot come from God.
Why? Because God depends on your beliefs. So if morality comes from God in one religion, it can come from another God in another religion. If Huitzilopochtli (the Aztec Sun God) says that it is right to perform human sacrifice, and another God forbids such an action, then which God is right?
It is a logical paradox, since they're all based on faith based belief, and not true reality. I could believe that the pigs fly or the sky is purple, but it won't make it so.

If we assume that there was only one true God, and He says something is right, it doesn't mean that God is right about it. An immoral lying God can easily claim that anything is immoral, for example that "suffering a witch to live" is wrong in their eyes. Yet really if witches do exist or not, killing them because they are one is pure discrimination and murder. So in that context, God is in the wrong there. Morality is not something a God would be limited by, but it doesn't mean a God would be entirely above and beyond morality either.

The most acceptable way of dealing with this problem is to accept that there is no way of testing for a God or their existence. Nor can we truly know what such a being wants from us. Morality can be tried and tested in reality. Gods cannot.

So people should stop treating their religions as infallible or moral and should step back and look at their beliefs more critically.

And then they should realise that their religions are not more important than the rights and lives of others.
And if they still believe that, they should probably get psychological help...

I have always thought that something you have no control over like your sexual orientation or race is far more important than the right to believe in a supreme being.

There's nothing wrong with it. In fact, God is very much worthy of ridicule. :D (Philosophical Talk #4)

And no truly almighty being would even need to encourage people to censor, harm or kill others who ridicule them. If you honestly feel you need to shout down blasphemers to protect your all powerful God's feelings from being hurt, then really that's an insult to your God in itself. :)

One word indoctrination children are vulnerable and gullible religious leaders understand this and they exploit this weakness teaching them that god is great and everybody who disagrees with you is in the wrong they teach them that they do not have to think critically because god has already done that for them that they do not have to take responsibility because you can just pray and automatically be forgiven teaching them that something they have no control over is wrong religion is an excuse for laziness, stupidity, gullibility, intolerance, justification for human rights abuses telling them that we could not have the sense to understand what is morally correct because our creator is the only one with logical reasoning apparently and the thing that disgusts me the most of religion is that they target children they tell mothers and fathers that having more children and teaching them these lies will guarantee them a card to heaven but what good is reward with out learning a lesson? what good is learning without experience? what good is intelligence if it is plagued with extreme bias? the answer is nothing look throughout history people did the right thing not out of fear of eternal punishment but because they knew it was the right thing to do! Where would scientific technology be today if it weren't for those who rebelled and asked why instead of blinding following teachings of authority.what good is this? it is not good at all if we continue like this we will never learn from our past mistakes we need to ask why that is the very definition of science the fact that people asked why and wanted to know how that should be more than enough to encourage someone not a thought of eternal reward or eternal punishment shielding your children may seem like the right thing to do yet how will they learn anything if they are fed everything with a silver spoon they need experience wishful thinking is a possibility yet it wont last forever you need to remove those glasses that are preventing you from seeing reality as dream where everything is alright and we have the answers to everything because we do not we need to work.

I hate every religion (one exception: Buddhism) , but I don't hate the people that follow them.  I hate any religion that treats women as property. I hate any religion that says that people can be owned. I hate any religion that discriminates against other people.

What about Jainism? It's even more peaceful than Buddhism. :)

Anyhow, yeah. I don't like religions and ideologies similar to cults. I do not hate the members of religions. I do, however, hate individual people who use their religion as an excuse to breach human rights or be a homophobe, etc. But I judge each person as the individual they are, not by the group they may belong to.

We actually need criticism to check how our societies doing, otherwise we could end up becoming severely immoral without realising. Critical thinking is the key to our survival as a civilisation and as a species. Without it we're doomed to drown in our own ignorance and stupidity.

Absolutely in agreement. Without criticism and critiquing of our society and government, those things are likely to go off the rails in rather dystopian ways.
Currently they seem to be doing just that in much of the west. A law was just passed in Australia which criminalizes making fun of and potential even criticism
of religions. Essentially they've passed a bloody blasphemy law so that they won't have even the appearance of racism or Islamophobia (the latter of which
doesn't even actually exist). Dislike of and the rejection of religions is called atheism, and of religious groups we tend to be more persecuted than any other
religious minority.

I don't like your religion and want to call it regressive, anti-democratic and even savage? I don't care if it hurts your feelings or riles you up. If your religion is
so indefensible that even the mere refutation and criticism of it is enough to drive believers to violence over debate? Then that religion deserves it, and should
likely be smashed.

"Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless."

Suppose it is rather irrelevant if the government will simply shut your mouth for you, yeah. Can't believe how far they're willing to go so peoples feelings
aren't hurt. Its not their job, nor do they have the right. If I want to hurt someone's feelings I'm perfectly within my rights to attempt to do so. Bloody molly

Blasphemy laws themselves should be outlawed, not added. Anti-free speech laws should be crimes against humanity.

Right on. I completely agree with you on that one. I can hate Islam without hating Muslims.
I can hate Christianity without hating Christians, and I can hate Judaism without hating Jews.
And I have every right to do so if I so choose, and be vocal about it if I wish to do so. Ideology
should never be above reproach.

They seriously need to learn that their imaginary friends aren't worth killing others over. It p*sses me off that there are people who honestly believe that.

And it doesn't matter what they think is right... some areas of morality are fixed. Killing another person is wrong.
